It is time for the annual miniature show at Place des Arts, so I set about making a piece of 1:144-scale art in progress. I don’t think Van Gogh used a dentist’s pick to put dots of paint on real silk canvas, but such is the life of a micro-miniaturist, always having to improvise for art’s sake.
Talking about improvisation, I recently gave two classes in miniature woodturning to help people discover a new hobby. They were soon happily turning out rolling pins, honey dippers, Christmas decorations and even nativity scenes. All with just some dowel and using one of the microlathes I made especially for the seminars. The store is already planning some more for next year, so who knows, maybe microturning will catch on big time.
