A nest of tables

Recently a colleague took apart an old bookshelf and was about to discard the pieces when he remembered that I have a thing for odd bits of wood. Upon closer inspection, under a wood stain I discovered some really nice slabs of maple, which I cleaned up and sanded down. The solid slabs were a decent 4 cm (approx. 1 1/2″) thick and had a good weight to them, just right for a coffee table design I had in mind. For the leg arches I sliced up many thin strips of wood before gluing them back together in an arc. This all took place last weekend.

Now, if you look closely at the main picture, you will see a small speck. This 1/144 scale copy of the table is what I worked on this weekend. I have enlarged it for you (photo, bottom left). The table top is about 6 mm (1/4″) long, and for the arches I again laminated strips of wood to maintain authenticity.

Now for some coffee to go with the table.
